Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of the Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU) and direct supervision of the OACU Assistant Director, the Office of Animal Care and Use Coordinator (OACU Coordinator) has a vital role in ensuring a high quality animal care and use program that reflects the University of Georgia's commitment to humane and responsible animal-based research and teaching. The primary responsibility is to ensure that all animal research is conducted humanely to protect animal welfare and meet stakeholder expectations, and that the institution complies with state, local, and federal regulations, while ensuring efficient and high-quality performance. Specific responsibilities will include reporting to and working with the Director and Assistant Director, overseeing the daily OACU operations, and managing special projects.
Excellent service to the various clientele of the OACU is essential. Clientele of the OACU include the UGA research community, the IACUC members, and other key research support services. Effective execution of the incumbent's responsibilities is critical to ensuring the University's continued compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and policy.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- A broad knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques involved in animal-based research compliance, as well as a deep understanding of oversight agency regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to animal-based research compliance
- Excellent demonstrated skills in written communication
- Attention to detail, preferably with experience editing documents
- Excellent demonstrated skills in oral communication, including strong active listening skills
- The ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work independently and cooperatively in a time-sensitive environment

- No unusual physical demands other than a requirement for participation in an occupational health and safety program, which will include vaccination and fitting for a respirator.
- Sitting or standing for long periods of time using a computer monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
- Frequent communication via email and other Internet modalities. Some telephone contact required.
- Driving to and walking for inspections. Driving ranges from on-campus to a few hours from campus. Walking ranges from across campus to throughout various locations in a large building to around the pastures.
- Occasional overnight inspections. Some inspections (2-3/year) require overnight stays (1-2 nights) at hotels.

- Conduct preliminary review of animal research projects for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
- Provide a determination whether a proposed activity meets the regulatory and policy definition of research that requires an IACUC protocol.
- Provide a determination whether a proposed activity requires specific related documents, such as Biosafety protocol approval, chemical hazard information sheets, MOUs, and Interinstitutional Agreements.
- Interact with IACUC members and vet reviewers as needed to facilitate the review process.
- Conduct IACUC inspections, including scheduling, recruiting IACUC members, completing inspection reports, and ensuring all deficiencies are addressed.
- Participate in compliance and quality assurance oversight activities, such as post-approval monitoring (PAM).
- Participate in the development, launch, and maintenance of a post-approval monitoring program.
- Serve as a general resource to faculty, staff, and students.
- Facilitate collaborative partnerships and communication with university departments for the implementation and coordination of programs/services.
- Other work as assigned, including: assist with special projects, annual reports, and other documents;
- Assist with preparation for and execution of AAALAC accreditation site visits and USDA inspections
- Coverage for colleagues during vacation or during vacancies.
