Environmental & Regulatory Compliance Officer

The City of Freeport, Illinois, is looking for its first Environmental & Regulatory Compliance Officer.  Under supervision of the Public Works Director, the Compliance Officer plans, develops, and directs the necessary monitoring, evaluation, and investigative activities, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and environmental regulations. 

The Compliance Officer will develop, implement, and manage environmental compliance programs; prepare and file regulatory reports; serve as a technical resource and advisor to City departments; and work closely with government and private environmental and regulatory agencies.

The successful candidate will be knowledgeable of environmental regulations and permit requirements related to solid waste, wastewater, storm water, and drinking water.  Familiarity with principles and practices of budgeting, communication, performance standards, records management, and resource management, to achieve outcomes and expectations in implementing compliance programs, consistent with environmental, health, safety, security laws, regulations and permits.

Education and experience required includes a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Science, Environmental Studies, Biology, Public Health or a closely related field.  One to three years of responsible experience in monitoring and administering environmental compliance programs for public or private agencies is preferred.

The City of Freeport offers a competitive salary and benefit package, including health, dental, vision and life insurance, 457 deferred compensation plan, and an Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension. Starting salary is $55,000 to $65,000 DOQ.
